...in a cycle ride

Today, I found God in the joy and exhilaration of a bike ride, which was unexpected, given that I hadn’t been on a bike for over 25 years. I decided to try out a local cycle path – a converted railway track – that I had heard was particularly beautiful.

And I wasn’t let down. The trees overhanging the track on either side created a tunnel of red, brown and orange, with the late afternoon light dripping through the foliage. The bike wheels crunched over the fallen leaves and twigs. And, at the end of the pathway, the track brought me out into a wide open park, with the mist hanging gently over the goalposts and hiding the far reaches of the path I was on.

Not only was I reliving my youth – and yes, it is true, you don’t forget how to ride a bike – but I was seeing my new city from a different perspective.

When I returned, my heart was filled with a deep happiness and contentment that told me I had encountered God in the wonder of his autumnal creation.
