… in preparing for Christmas

Early every morning I stare at the headings on my ‘Christmas Preparations’ list – what to do today? Today I put aside a visit to the post office, the supermarket and the shops, and went instead to deliver a gift to someone I had worked with before I retired. She is the housekeeper for a Jesuit community.

Ten minutes into our nattering she mentioned one of the priests, a rather unwell elderly gentleman, who was about to celebrate Mass in their little chapel. I asked him if I could join him. He grinned, held my hand and replied, ‘The Holy Spirit works in wondrous ways. Come in!’

Ah, the richness and lasting bounty of that gift – not to be found under any heading on my list or in any earthly shop!
