Journey into Freedom Day 46

Jesus is taken down from the cross

Preparation: Begin by stilling, then dedicating the time of prayer to God and asking God that all you think, feel and imagine are for the glory of God.

Gift: I ask for sorrow as I contemplate Christ who died for my sins.

Setting: After the death, Joseph and the women do what they can to give Jesus a decent burial. Who are you in this story? You may just want to stay with the body of Jesus in silence.

Mark 15:42-47 HCSB

When it was already evening, because it was preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed.

Final Prayer: End with a formal prayer such as the Lord’s Prayer/Our Father.

A Thought for Today:

Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps -

An Ancient Homily for Holy Saturday

Our Master lies asleep and is at rest;

His Heart has ceased to bleed, His Eye to weep.

The sun ashamed has dropt down in the west;

Our Master lies asleep. Now we are they who weep,

and trembling keep Vigil, with wrung heart in a sighing breast,

While slow time creeps, and slow the shadows creep.

Renew Thy youth, as eagle from the nest;

O Master, who hast sown, arise to reap:

No cock-crow yet, no flush on eastern crest;

Our Master lies asleep.
