Day 1 - Conversion

A man stands in a cave

Day 1 - Listen here

1 Kings 19: 9, 11-13

The word of the Lord came to [Elijah] and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”… And [the Lord] said, ‘You are to go out tomorrow and stand before the Lord on the mountain. Look! The Lord shall pass by.”

And a mighty wind was breaking up the mountains, and shattering rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind there was an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a light breeze – and the Lord was there. And it happened that when Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his goatskin; and he went out and stood underneath the cave, and look! A voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Reflection

The meeting between God and Elijah on Mount Horeb in the sound of a light breeze or in the sound of sheer silence has been much used for prayer and meditation over the centuries. This experience must have been very difficult for the prophet Elijah because God came to meet him in a totally unexpected way. God did not come in the earthquake or in the fire or in the mighty wind, all the ways that God had used previously to announce the divine presence, but instead God came in silence. In the passage, twice God asks, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Imagine, for a moment, that God is putting the same question to you in your own situation at present. What would your answer be? What do you expect from God? What is your favourite image of God? Elijah became aware of the presence of God in “the sound of a light breeze.” Where can you meet God today? Have you ever been surprised by the presence of God in situations where you never thought of encountering God?

Prayer

O God, you are much greater than anything we can hope for and you go far beyond anything we can imagine.

Teach us to be open to your coming in the way and at the time you choose.

Teach us to perceive your voice in the sound of silence so that we can accomplish your will in all things.

Amen.
